The term polycrystalline describes a method of manufacturing solar cells. Unlike monocrystalline solar cells, not a single silicon crystal but many different sized silicon crystals are used. For a long time, the manufacturing costs for polycrystalline cell production were cheap and were therefore the leading technology used. Polycrystalline modules have a slightly lower efficiency than monocrystalline models. Due to the way they are manufactured, the modules have a bluish shimmer and are therefore easy to distinguish from the black monocrystalline solar modules.
